The main eco-system on which life on this moon is based is a bacterium that draws energy from chemicals released by hydrothermal vents such as sulphur. These vents are caused by internal heating of the moon, which is caused by friction between Europa, Jupiter and the other Galilean moons. Internal heating causes any an underground ocean to be formed under the thick layer of ice surrounding the whole moon. Because the underground ocean is cover by such a thick layer of ice virtually no light gets through making this a dark world. Because of this no form of photosynthesis can take place thus there is no plant life. I
